Making Camp at Jasper

Yesterday was a rest day for us, except for Doretha who drove Mother, Barbara, and Ray to the Edmonton Airport (about an hour each way) to catch early flights back to their homes in the U.S. We did take time to pick up our rental camping gear from Rent eh Tent Canada. The camping goods performed more or less as advertised. Today we are off to Jasper.

After cleaning and vacuuming the rental house we left Edmonton at about 10:30 and arrived in Jasper at about 3:30 having taken about an hour for lunch.

 

We were on our way following the Yellowhead Trail:

 

 

There was some terrific scenery along the way, particularly as we approached the Rockies. Here are a few shots taken from the car by Linda:

 

As often as not, we stopped at Petro-Canada for gas.

Here is our trusty steed. It was a tight squeeze for us, our luggage, and camping gear. Very fortunately, Chuck carried some of our luggage in his vehicle.

We have arrived at the Watipi camp ground which was about 6 km south of Jasper. Doretha has made the reservations.

Where to put the ground sheet?

We laid out the tent all right, but a small gap in the direction sheet gave us a bit of trouble as we found that one fiber glass rod was too long for where we wanted to put it. Eventually, we got the right rod in the right tent sleeve, so the tent was erected.

 

The tent was advertised as a 6 man tent. It would be very cosy for 6. With sleeping bags and air mattresses, it was about right for 3 people, which was what was required.

We had to make sure that all food and food preparation tools were in the car. Apparently, such items were not even safe in pop-up tents if any canvas was showing.

Well, our first night in the tent. It is time for bed (10PM) and it will still be light until 10:30 or 11:00.
