Downtown San Francisco

Linda finished the project she was working on last night, so the decks were cleared for visiting downtown San Francisco. So, we took the hotel shuttle bus to the airport and caught a ride on the BART at the BART station there.

After a 45 minute journey we arrived at the Embarcadero Station, which was as close as we could get to Pier 1.

Well here we are at Pier 1, the old Port authority which has now been turned into a craft/specialty food market.

Outside of Pier 1 there some interesting sights:

A statue of Ghandi:

Ferry Office.

The Bridge:

We then proceeded to walk down the “Embarcadero” towards Fisherman’s Wharf. Many of these building where of “heritage” value:

We saw a few boats on the way:

San Francisco Belle IMG_4168_edited-1

California being what it is, every taste is catered for:

We saw a few buildings on the way. The tallest building in San Francisco is the Transamerica building:Transamerica Pyramid

One of the oldest (built in the 1930’s) recognizable large building in San Francisco is the Coit building:Coit Tower

I don’t know what the name of this building was, but it was striking and big.I couldn't find the name of this building

Maybe this road helped to inspire the opening scene of Bullit.

We found it rather amusing to see a locked gate to a Public Shore in the middle of a weekday.IMG_4173_edited-1

By this time Linda had had enough of walking, so we picket up a trolley car to Fisherman’s Wharf.

IMG_3379_edited-1

We have arrived at Fisherman’s Wharf. Even on a weekday, there is a good sized crowd sampling the entertainment.IMG_4181

I took this shot of a marina from a Kodak Beauty Spot on the Wharf. Nice look if you like boats. I do.

We stopped for lunch at Swiss Louis which supposedly specialized in Italian cuisine. However, one of the specialties of the house was Crab Dungeness Enchiladas which I ordered. It was great.

IMG_4183_edited-1

Linda ordered a prawn dish that she was satisfied with. However, she loved the view to Alcatraz. So, we were both satisfied.

We then walked to the end of the wharf which was on PIER 39.

IMG_4192_edited-1

From the end of the pier we could get a good view of a colony of sea lions:

The navy was in the vicinity as well.

IMG_4197_edited-1

Linda and I had a peruse in this store that pretty much only sold music boxes.

IMG_4184_edited-1

This shop sold nothing but Holiday gear. Linda bought some stuff for Halloween.

IMG_4198_edited-1

Linda bought a number of socks from this specialty sock shop.

This comedian had a neat routine with a bullwhip.

IMG_4200_edited-1

First, set up the participant (victim) with a cigarette in his mouth.

Next, when the cigarette quivers too much, tear the cigarette in half so the cigarette doesn’t move around so much.

IMG_4206_edited-1

Finally, have a crack.

IMG_4212_edited-1

At the end of the pier, we saw a few other interesting things.

IMG_4217_edited-1

These are big cleats.

IMG_4225_edited-1

They are trying to add a bit of pizzazz to the rest rooms.

IMG_4228_edited-1

We certainly got an even better view of Alcatraz.

IMG_4214_edited-1

Fast boat.

 IMG_4219_edited-1

Linda stocked up on candy.

IMG_4227_edited-1

Linda like the fact that there were bright flowers everywhere.

IMG_4229_edited-1

A jazz/pop keyboard person provided entertainment at the entrance to the wharf. We had a listen and then decided to head back to the BART.

IMG_4233_edited-1

On the way we noticed this interesting sculpture.

IMG_4235_edited-1

So, we hopped back onto the tram. We  noticed that all of the trams seemed to have been purchased from other cities’ operations.

IMG_4239_edited-1

We got off downtown near the Arts Centre.

IMG_4243_edited-1

Interesting head sculptures.

IMG_4244_edited-1

We came across this amazing giant sculpture celebrating Americans who fought against the Fascists in Spanish Civil War. The letter substructures spell San Francisco.

Another interesting sculpture.

Neat recycling bin

IMG_4261_edited-1

Once we caught the BART back to the airport we had our first live sighting of a Segway. This smiling policeman was happy to pose for Linda. I’m not surprised. A lot of them were on bicycles.
