Arrival in San Francisco

Well, we left the house at about 8AM to catch our10AM plane to Sydney. We then caught the 1PM flight to San Francisco with no problem. Rather amazingly, we had a spare seat on our row, so we had a bit of room to stretch out. Anyway, we made good time on a 12 1/2 hour flight with hardly anything to complain about except boredom. Linda said that was one of the easiest trans-Pacific crossings we had ever made. We didn't get much of a view of San Francisco as we cam in because of the low cloud cover:

As we started to make our long landing approach, I caught a shadow of ourselves:

Here, we finally break the cloud cover:

We left on the 12th and arrived on the 12th. That’s just the way it is when you are crossing international date lines.

We did stand around in lines a bit at the airport satisfying the requirements of entering the USA, but we managed to avoid a detailed baggage check. After a bit of a rest, we caught a courtesy bus to where we are staying, Larkspur Landing. It is a nice place, but a bit far from any shopping.

But we had a little hike (about a mile) to a predominately Latin shopping area which is formally called downtown South San Francisco. We had a great little gawk and shop at the Mexican markets and picked up some Mexican food supplies (and takeaway enchiladas) to fix back at our kitchenette apartment. Along wih quite a number or Mexican restaurants in that area, there was a smattering of Asian and South American eateries.

Here is a picture of City Hall.

The country, state, and municipal flags are flying here:

There were also some old style street lanterns along the main drag:

There was also a very impressive public library building:
